How to Beat the Winter Blues

The winter months can be difficult emotionally. Advanced RehabTrust knows that this can be a difficult time for a lot of people, so we have compiled a small list of ways to beat the wintertime blues. This list is to assist you or your loved ones who are having a difficult time this season. So, without further ado, here is list that we hope can assist you in beating the winter blues!

  1. Acknowledge your feelings– feeling down is a valid emotion to experience. When you are feeling down, recognize what you are feeling and try to find the root cause of the emotion. Understand that feeling this way is okay and that there are people who love and care about you.
  2. Get some sunshine– Did you know that catching a few rays can decrease depression? It’s true! Just by enjoying the beautiful sunshine, you can be on your road to feel better. Sunshine not only makes the day physically bright, but it can also make your emotions happy. But don’t forget to put on some sunblock before you go out.
  3. Schedule time to visit with your family/friends– Although you may not feel up to having a visit with someone, getting together with a close friend or family member can possibly be just what the doctor prescribed. Chatting with friends can provide you with a safe environment to talk about your feelings and sort through the feelings together.
  4. Engage in a hobby– Hobbies can keep you happy and busy. By keeping busy, you are keeping your mind distracted from the pain or sadness you may be experiencing. Hobbies can range from taking up painting, learning how to play an instrument or playing cards. A great place to try out different hobbies would be your local senior center. Not all senior centers offer the same activities, but you can find different hobbies that you may enjoy. You can also meet people who enjoy the same hobby you do! If you already have hobby that you love, stick with it and make it part of your everyday routine. Making time for your hobbies can provide you with the “me time” you are possibly craving.
