3 Ways to Keep Your Asthma Under Control

Did you know that about 24,000 people in the United States have asthma? And of that 24,000, 6% of those cases are present in adult who are over the age of 65?  Advanced RehabTrust noticed that number and we believe that number is a bit too high. So, we have depicted 3 ways to help you keep your asthma under control.

  1. Understand what asthma is– Asthma is when your airways in your lungs are constricted finding it hard to breathe. It is usually your body’s response to either an allergy or illness that is present within your body. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that it is not uncommon to find yourself being diagnosed with asthma if you are over the age of 65.
  2. Ask Questions– If you are having symptoms of asthma, make an appointment with your healthcare provider. In your appointment, ask your doctor to explain what your specific asthma is and what triggers it. By asking questions you are allowing yourself to be more informed of your disease which in turn will provide you with proper knowledge to treat your symptoms accordingly. Inquire about obtaining an action plan that can help you when you are experiencing an asthma attack. Communicating with your doctor is an important aspect to health need, so be sure to be continue asking questions and staying in contact with your doctor as prescribed.
  3. Action plan– An action plan is a step-by-step plan created by you and your physician that provides you with the proper instructions on what to do if and when you are experiencing an asthmatic flare-up. Sometimes there is a recommended daily medication needed to prevent an asthma attack, and other times medication may not be the best option. This link can provide you with an example of what an action plan could look like and even provides you with the ability to download a blank format so you and your doctor can create an easy to read plan together. Action plans can also provide you with the confidence that you can manage your asthma with ease.

Although asthma is not curable, we hope that these three tactics will help with your management of asthma. A great place to look further into what asthma is, preventative measures and other resources would be the Asthma and Allergy Foundation and by clicking here you will be directed straight to their webpage.
